Cambodia is an amazing country, with the friendliest, kindest people anywhere, a proud ancient history and a tragic recent past. The landscape of Cambodia is dominated by the great Mekong river and the vast lake Tonle Sap. The interior is riven with steaming jungles and paddy fields.
Phnom Penh is a beautiful capital with glorious royal palaces and temples, and Siem Reap is a vibrant and charming town. The laid-back nature of Cambodia is felt throughout the country but is most evident on the idyllic islands and beaches of the south. The heart of Cambodia lies at Angkor, where the tropical forest has claimed the mysterious ruins of the ancient Khmer empire.
I spent three weeks in Cambodia, arriving by boat from Vietnam along the Mekong river, then travelling across the country by boat, bus and tuktuk to the Thai border.
